ARM ‘to demonstrate Google Android platform’Chip design firm ARM is set to demonstrate a prototype of Google’s Android mobile phone platform next week, it has been reported.

According to Reuters, a source close to the company has revealed that it will unveil its new devices during next week’s Mobile World Congress in Spain.

The mobile handsets, which are described by Wired News as “Android-based smartphone[s]“, are all said to run on the Google open source Android operating system.

Previously, ARM - which designs processor cores found in a range of devices, such as the iPhone and Blackberries - had declined to enter into the Google alliance.

The search engine provider officially announced its plans for an open handset alliance and Android platform in November last year.

At the time, it stated that, through inter-firm collaboration, it hoped “Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today”.

Among the companies that have signed up to the project are T-Mobile and High Tech Computer, both of which have stated they intend to offer mobile devices based on the Android platform later this year.

It is not yet clear what the model ARM intends to present looks like or which companies would supply its parts. Both Google and ARM declined to make a comment.
