The impact of a slowing global economy has been stronger on the mid-range handset segments, as compared with the high- and low-end segments, indicated Tsung-kai Cheng, manager of Nokia Taiwan’s clients and market operations.
Low-end handsets are daily necessities and high-end handsets target consumers who are not buying handsets for necessity, and these two types of purchases are not as affected by the economy as much as the mid-range segments, Cheng noted.
With distributors not confident about sales of mid-range handsets, Cheng pointed out that Nokia is planning to adjust related prices in coordination with more market promotions to stimulate consumer demand.
According to market watchers, handset vendors are introducing a number of high-end handsets with various promotions to stimulate demand. High-end handset shipments are expected to remain at current levels or perhaps even increase.
