Mr Ho-Soo Lee, EVP of Mobile Solutions Center, Telecommunication Business, Samsung Electronics, held a keynote address at the Symbian Smartphones Show 2008 on behalf of Samsung. The Korean representative presented in-depth views of what the manufacturer is planning for its future, as well as an insight into SMI (Samsung Mobile Innovator) program.
Convergence is a very important issue in Samsung's agenda, but not the multimedia convergence that we are used to. Samsung wishes to have your entire household electronics connected to each other, not in the electronic way only, but also in the physical way.
The EVP spoke of the Freeplay concept, with which users can detach an HD display from a Blu-ray player, while media is being stream from anywhere in your house, such as your computer, phone, or the Blu-ray player itself.
HBC (Human body communication) was an important concept as well, and while it may look similar to the Nokia Morph concept, the focus is in a completely different direction. The concept demonstrates a watch connected wirelessly to your phone, which shares the same interface. The watch's display is flexible, it's presumably touchscreen, while the watch itself provides 4G connectivity with real-time video broadcasting, instant push-email, and bio-sensors.

The highlight for developers was Samsung Mobile Innovator. The program offers 300 free application signatures at registration, and is divided into three main areas:
SMI is opened to anyone, while Samsung Innovation Quest is to open soon once again.
Mr Ho-Soo Lee also presented the eight reasons to innovate with Samsung:

Samsung Mobile Innovator press release:
London, October 21st 2008: Samsung today announced the public opening of Samsung Mobile Innovator, a new program enabling mobile software developers to create applications for use across all Samsung S60 devices for the first time. From today, the full Samsung Mobile Innovator portal and its services can be accessed at http://innovator.samsungmobile.com.
The launch of Samsung Mobile Innovator is an important new initiative for Samsung, opening new opportunities for collaboration with application development partners, network operators and platforms.
To celebrate their public launch, Samsung Mobile Innovator is offering to Symbian Sign 300 applications for FREE to developers registering with Mobile Innovator from today onwards..
Samsung Mobile Innovator provides developers with the tools, technical content and support they require to create applications and services which are differentiated from their competitors and that work on the Samsung S60 platform. It also has a strong focus on the evolution of better business opportunities for its members, by providing end-to-end sales channels and service platforms for delivering applications to mobile phone users.
Samsung Mobile Innovator is free to join, and basic (Hub) membership is open to everyone at all levels of interest in open mobile devices. In recognition of partner companies, there is also an invite-only Core membership level.
“With such a fast-paced development life-cycle of products, our work with application development partners and other innovators in the ecosystem is of great value to us,” said Philip Northam, Global Marketing Manager at Samsung Mobile Innovator. “The launch of Mobile Innovator is a significant step in our commitment to building a strong open collaboration culture and developer community around Samsung.”
The key services that Samsung is making available to help developers collaborate, innovate and accelerate ideas for Samsung S60 devices are:
- Lab.dev – a virtual device lab to provide access to current Samsung mobile devices for remote application development and testing and verify application functionality. Users also have the benefit of reducing development costs, while increasing productivity.
- Market.dev – business development support to give as much help as possible to accelerate all developer ideas and help registered members sell their applications and services on Samsung devices.
- Ask.dev – exclusive and confidential technical support to help reduce the time it takes to develop new ideas and bring current applications to Samsung devices. This dedicated online support is unlimited and free to core members.
Northam continued: “We firmly believe that the key stakeholders to the success of S60 on Samsung devices are mobile developers, and we’re committed to ensuring that they have the best possible tools and support – whether as device creators or as independent application developers. Samsung Mobile Innovator is our commitment to ensuring that Samsung continues to drive to the long term success of Symbian OS and S60 and, in the long term, the forthcoming Symbian Foundation.”
