Airis T482 GPS smartphone

Those who couldn't wait for Garmin's GPS phone named NuviPhone, can now delight themselves with the Airis T482, which is a GPS phone as well.

Airis isn't a known brand across the globe, but it seems famous in France. What really matters is the features that it brings. There is a very satisfying 3.2" touchscreen, although it has a disappointing resolution of 240x320 (QVGA). The GPS IC is a SirfStar III which means greater precision GPS locks, and to use it accordingly, Co-Pilot navigation software is included.

To power this smartphone, 416MHz Marvell PXA270 processor is used, with 128MB ROM and a 64MB RAM which we think is not sufficient. The processing power is excellent but RAM might be too little. To keep all this power under control, Windows Mobile 5 is used, and we wonder why this choice if Windows Mobile 6 is incorporated in most smartphones that use Microsoft's platform, and the upcoming devices use Windows Mobile 6.1.

The biggest problem here is explained by "Georg", a commenter at NaviGadget:

I got Friday this Airis T 482 Smartphone. Mine does have English OS. All in All I´m very disapointed! OK its cheap but it is not more worth!
Only OS5
Its not possible to put keys on hold!
The car cradel which Airis offers is a absolute catstrophe! If you plug the Phone in it decides by it self what it will do. It can switch of or it can switch on the camera. Mostly it switches first the cmaera on and than shuts down by it self, because the holder on the cradle presses the keys! But how to navigat without windschildholder?

It has on the top under a plastiv an external GPS Antenna connector. But if the hole protector is once removed you cannot close it again. so dirt and mosture will go in to the housing!
Only advantage is the 3,2? screen! But this is all! Also the housing is painted with a kind of rubber color like the ETEN X 500
So it feels good in your hand. But in my mind, this unit is usless as Mobilephone! And just for navigation you will find at Airis cheaper and better PDAS ith even a bigger (3,5?) display!

The device is quite big in size and weight, measuring 125 x 62 x 14mm and weighing 165g.

Other features include:

  • 2 Megapixel camera
  • microSD slot
  • Quad-band EDGE
  • Bluetooth v2.0
  • Wi-Fi
  • FM radio
