The Palm webOS is designed in focus on the CSS, XHTML, and Javascript technologies from its very core. Its highlights are the sleek user interface, and the link between one's phone, home, and work. It is also developer-friendly, as it was designed to allow developers to complement it, which sounds like an open-source platform, but it isn't. WebOS will also allow developers to distribute applications over-the-air, and on-device Palm application store.

"webOS and Pre bring game-changing simplicity to an increasingly mobile world by dissolving the barriers that surround your information. The new platform brings Palm Sinergy, which offers features such as linked contacts, a facility that unites a user's contacts from services such as Facebook, Google, and Outlook, and merges them; layered calendars, where the software combines several calendars of the user and transposes them as the user wishes; and combined messaging, where the device joins all SMSes and IM chats into threaded style conversations, and the user decides how to communicate with the user on the other side.

The webOS itself will carry features such as web-connected applications that automatically update themselves; multitasking capability; multi-touch user interface that allows a user to move activities like flipping through a deck of cards and rearrange items simply by dragging them; universal search that searches the device and the web; cleverly-placed notifications, such as an active notification in the footer of the interface.

The Palm Pre is a high-end device that sits on a business-looking design. It has a 3.1" touchscreen display, which might be multi-touch enabled, because the software is, and has a QWERTY slide-out keyboard. The display has HVGA resolution (320x480 pixels).

Palm says that the Pre is engineered to feel natural in the hand and comfortably small in the pocket and that it has a smooth, rounded ergonomic design. It has a gesture area, which enables simple, intuitive gestures for navigation, a ringer switch, which easily silences the device with one touch, and a proximity sensor, which automatically disables the touch screen and turns off the display whenever you put the phone up to your ear.

Continuing with specifications, the Pre brings EVDO Rev. A or UMTS HSDPA, depending on the region, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, a desktop-class web browser, Bluetooth, 8GB of internal memory with no further expansion option, and a 3.5mm jack for multimedia purposes.

The Palm Pre will be compatible with Sprint TV, Sprint Navigation, Sprint Radio, among other Sprint services. The device is, obviously, locked to Sprint's network.

Neither release dates nor price are available, all Palm has said is that the phone will available at Sprint Q1 2009.

Accessories compatible with the Pre will be the Palm Touchstone charging dock, which operates via magnetic means, the Vehicle Power Adapter, with a removable microUSB cable, and the Slip leather case.

Pre will support a variety of differentiated on-device Sprint services, including Sprint TV^(R), offering an extensive selection of live and on-demand programming. Sprint also offers more than a dozen streaming-radio applications, including Sprint Radio with more than 150 channels.
