This is the day before the U.S. release of the new HTC / T-Mobile G1 phone and just days before the release of the United Kingdom, and Google has saved their promise to make the Android open source software.

Starting today, anyone can download the code for Android open source project, which will allow developers to build and run the code needed to operate a cellular phone. This means that software developers can create features for Android based phones and any manufacturer can make phones that run OS Android.

In the past, developers could not build characteristics that easy because manufacturers and carriers have controlled the telephone market very closely. The Open Handset Alliance is a joint project with the likes of HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung and Motorola.
