It seems that the T-Mobile G1 is more advanced than its host network, with the support of HSUPA (INFO) before T-Mobile USA network supply. According to a T-Mobile UK press release, T-Mobile G1, which is the first power Android smartphone supports HSUPA, which offers a speed boost over the HSDPA (INFO) for uploads and downloads.

HTC confirmed that the G1 to be sold in the UK is the same device that is offered in the United States and is, indeed, support HSUPA. This means that this smartphone offers speeds faster data in the UK when it launches the 30th October with T-Mobile UK.
