Toshiba Puts DMFC in Cell Phone

Recommends Toshiba has a fuel cell with methanol (DMFC) inside a cell phone, but the availability of commercial technology is not expected soon.

The prototype cell phone, Toshiba, which shows the CEATEC exhibition in Chiba, Japan, offers about six hours of time with the DMFC, according to a Toshiba executive staff of the company booth. A battery of the same classic combination would be between three and four hours of talk time, the executive said.

DMFC produce electricity from a reaction between methanol, water and air. Toshiba executives would not disclose the capacity of the DMFC installed in the phone, but later declared a 50ml cartridge can complete the phone DMFC tank 15 times. This equates to a capacity of 3.33ml.

This is not the first time that Toshiba showed a DMFC-Powered cell phone. The company has been working with KDDI to demonstrate a DMFC-Powered cell phone in 2005, but the latest model is considerably smaller than that.

Last year, Toshiba demonstrated a prototype off the Gigabeat player that was powered by a DMFC instead of a conventional battery. This arrangement, which highlights the capacity of Toshiba to put a DMFC in a small device, offered 10 hours of battery life with a pool of 10 ml. The company also showed an external DMFC could be used to recharge a phone conventional battery.

When products based on the Toshiba DMFC technology will be commercially available is unclear. The Toshiba executive said the cell phone DMFC could be available next year, but the date has not yet been confirmed.

Runs this period with what Toshiba said last year. At that time, the company said it was working on a range of small devices powered by DMFC and expects to release within one to two years’ time.
