Verizon Wireless and Vodafone have announced their exclusive claim to be the first family of carriers to offer the new RIM BlackBerry smartphones Storm. Verizon Wireless will have exclusive rights to the BlackBerry 9530 smartphone Storm while Vodafone, a parent of Verizon, will claim rights to the storm BlackBerry 9500 in Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand. No launch dates have been given, but the joint press release states availability “later this fall.”
As the first BlackBerry touchscreen, a lot is riding on the storm for RIM. BlackBerry devices have always been known for their fine, usable keyboards and peripherals on the whole have been the tool of choice for many people who rely on e-mail to do business. As such, the introduction of a touch screen on a BlackBerry is something of a risk that touchscreens have long been considered poor when it comes to entering text - and a BlackBerry is nothing without text entry.

The touch screen is also supported by an accelerometer, which allows it to automatically rotate with the device. As such, RIM is able to use a storm has 20 key SureType keyboard virtual design, similar to the BlackBerry Pearl, when the phone is held vertically, while offering a full QWERTY layout when used landscape mode. Self-rotation also when used with the Web browser, which has a row of buttons at the bottom of the screen that allow users to switch between the page and column unique patterns and control if the user control of the finger pointer or mouse is used for scrolling and panning. Another function of the browser that people appreciate the double-tap zoom, as that found on the iPhone and Opera 9.5 browser for devices like the HTC Touch Diamond and Samsung i900 Omnia.
And since RIM knows how important text is a BlackBerry user, the storm also supports copying and pasting functionality. We do not have many other details about the phone yet, but we know there will support GPS for navigation, and the browser can handle RSS feeds. A 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus is on board, supported by special versions of Flickr and Facebook, and stereo Bluetooth support is there with a 3.5 mm headphone jack socket.
The RIM BlackBerry 9500 Storm support for Vodafone 3G UMTS (INFO) and HSPA (INFO) data on the 2100MHz band and quad-band GSM / EDGE. The Verizon goes further by offering all the support network of 9500 as well as EV-DO Rev A (INFO). Support for Verizon’s 3G network true dual-mode (INFO) 3G roaming world. It measures approximately 112.5mm x 62.2mm x 14.0mm (4.4 “x 2.4″ x .5 “) in size and weighs approximately 155g (5.5 oz). It offers 1 GB of internal storage and supports cards microSD larger than 16 GB of capacity.
